Newfound Sound is a women's a cappella singing group that sings four-part harmony in the barbershop style. We are the only women's barbershop chorus in Newfoundland and Labrador. Established in 1985, our chorus has been sharing friendship and song for over 37 years! We are so grateful to have been involved in many wonderful fundraisers, such as Socks in the City and Pink Days in Bloom to support Daffodil Place. We have entertained for the Children's Wish Foundation and the Eating Disorder Foundation Annual Gala. Each year, we look forward to singing carols at the "Christmas by Candlelight" at historic Commissariat House to support the food sharing network. We have shared our song at Government House and the NL Folk Festival.
In 2025, we were very proud to be part of the Canada Games Arta Vista program and had the opportunity to perform at the St. John's Convention Centre. We also hosted our own show "Music Brings Us Together" with guest choir Sectrum and other performers. We were very pleased to be part of the Anchormen Chorus concert "It's Barbershop Harmony Time".
With a generous grant from the Bruneau Centre for Excellence in Choral Music at MUN, we ran a four-week free public workshop to give interested singers an opportunity to learn a song in four-part a cappella and perform it with Newfound Sound on our spring show! We had over 20 participants and it was great fun!
In May 2024, Newfound Sound traveled to Sackville, New Brunswick, to attend the annual Atlantic area convention, including competing in the chorus contest. It was such a thrill to be back with all our Area 1 fellow singers who share our passion for barbershop harmony, and who give us so much love and support whenever we have the opportunity to get there. The Area Convention and Contest is held annually by our parent organization, Harmony Incorporated International. Qualifiers at the area level will be given the opportunity to compete at the annual International Convention and Contest. Since we are the only chorus in Newfoundland and Labrador, we have the added expense of air travel. We aim to attend the area event every two years, if possible. We hold regular fundraising activities to help member offset travel costs.
Under the energetic and creative direction of Dr. Phil Roberts, we are 25 women who come together every week to blend song with friendship and create a wonderful space for learning and fine tuning our performance craft. Our repertoire covers many genres such as traditional, pop and inspirational.
Contact us if you are looking for entertainment for your next event. We support charitable activities or we can discuss fees for corporate events.
